What do neuroscientists and electricians have in common?

The two disciplines have a common problem: how to ensure that signals are communicated from their place of origin to their destination in a reliable manner without interfering with the communication process?

The neuroscientist mapping neural pathways is inquiring into how information travels from sensory input to motor output within a very complex network of neurons. The neuroscientist wants to know which neural pathways carry specific types of signals and where those neurons are connected. The neuroscientist also wants to understand what happens to the individual if any of those pathways are disrupted or degraded, as well as how the nervous system compensates for such damage.

The electrician who designs and installs a domestic electrical system is asking the same questions about the electrical system.
