Gadling’s Top Five Most Photogenic Places in the US

Here at Gadling, we love photography. We have a Gadling Flickr group to which over 60 photographers from around the world regularly contribute, and from which we regularly pull our Photo of the Day. But today we were thinking about the places to go in the US where the best pictures can be had by a mere point and click, the places that are so lovely and photogenic that anyone can take killer pics there, and where the best photographers can make a career.

So after extensive research and deliberation, here’s the list:

1. Southern Utah: with more National Parks in the region than any place on earth, Southern Utah is a shutterbug’’s wet dream. Here are the parks where you can shoot away and fill up that 1 Gb Flash card in a few hours: Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, and Capitol Reef National Park.

2. Yellowstone National Park: thanks to Teddy Roosevelt for having the foresight and gumption to create this national park that is the jewel in the crown of the Park Service and easily one of the best places to shoot in the world.

3. Big Sur: for photos of the Pacific Ocean and poster-quality shots of where sea and land meet in the most glorious way, you can’t beat this stretch off the California coastline.

4. The Maine Coast: we can’t give props to the Pacific without including her photogenic sister, the Atlantic, and when you’re looking for rocky coastlines and iridescent lighthouses, well, there’s no place like Maine.

5. New York City: while the US is loaded with places of breath-taking natural beauty, you have to admit that man has done a pretty fine job creating gorgeous and intriguing landscapes out of the cities he’s built for himself. Apologies to folks from other cities who might find my selection New York as the best city to photograph a bit self-centered, but I’ve been to most of our major cities, and New York is (as Frank used to say) the king of the hill, top of the heap.
