How to Reduce False Call Button Alerts

False alerts are a waste of time for your staff and can train them to ignore all signals if they occur too frequently. However, most problems can be fixed with a few simple changes.

Choose a Low-Traffic Mounting Spot

Positioning a call point in a location that is not frequently walked past and is not likely to be brushed by staff, trolleys or customers is best. A location that is easily reachable in an emergency but not in normal use of a location will help to reduce accidental activation of a call point.

Use a Recessed or Guarded Design

Some Call Buttons have recessed faces or even have a protective collar around the press point to help prevent casual knocks from registering. If your current wireless Call Buttons are flush fit to the wall then consider replacing them with guarded variants.

Enable a Confirmation Delay

Consider a short confirmation delay time (or double-press) where your system will allow it. Information from the HSE on reducing accidental activation of workplace alert systems highlights the risk of staff losing faith in your system over time due to false alerts.

Set a Clear Staff Protocol

Let staff know that the call button is for genuine call onlys. This needs to be a short reminder, especially after staff changes.

Review Your Alert Logs

Most call systems will allow you to view the history of alerts sent. Regularly check the alerts, particularly for repeat instances of the same call button triggering at the same time and look to make changes where necessary.

Small changes to position, button style and staff behaviour can create large improvements to system reliability.
