“Overflow processes have been recognized, but they are not well understood,” wrote Adela Timmons, a doctoral student Gayla Margolin, professor of psychology. “Evidence of an overflow for up to two days suggests that some teenagers get caught up in a reverberating cycle of negative events.” The study included more than one hundred teenagers between 12 and 19 years of age and their parents. Participants completed surveys at the end of each day for 14 days. “The findings could be used to find ways to help teenagers better manage their moodiness, and improve their family relationships and school performance.” The researchers concluded that teens with more symptoms of anxiety and depression were more likely to be in a bad mood after arguing with their parents.

Talking to the family:
