We like to make things a little different than normal. In this case, we have prepared a somewhat special comparative since the two models we face should not be considered direct rivals by philosophy but instead move in a range of power and similar price.
Both are cabriolets, the Audi R8 Spyder with canvas top and the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 with hardtop practicable, but in my opinion, are intended for a different type of customer.
Differences: Audi R8 Spyder vs Mercedes-AMG SL 63
One has a canopy and the other a hardtop practicable, but they offer a level of power and very similar price. How different are they?
The Audi is a sport with all of the law. It is a car designed and made for the lovers of the driving and as it has demonstrated over the years it is one of the most effective models in any type of terrain, whether on fast roads, on mountain roads or in a circuit.
The Mercedes does not give up sportsmanship, but it does so more discreetly. I do not speak of power and performance, that is what remains as we will see below, but rather the fact that it is a much more versatile, comfortable, luxurious.
A convertible that could perfectly be used for day to day if not We have children and our pocket can pay its price, the maintenance and the expense of gasoline.
One atmospheric, the other bi-turbo
Underneath this grid, the R8 Spyder hides a 5.2 liter atmospheric V10 with a power of 540 hp and 540 Nm.
If we talk about their mechanics, in this section also differ greatly from each other. The Audi R8 Spyder rides a 5.2 liter V10 engine, atmospheric, ie without overfeeding, delivering a total of 540 hp at 7,800 rpm and 540 Nm of maximum torque when it reaches 6,500 laps.
The SL 63 offers a 5.5-liter bi-turbo V8 block under the hood. It is more powerful than the Audi, delivers 585 hp at 5,500 revolutions per minute and a tremendous torque of 900 Nm available at only 2,250 rpm and constant up to 3,750 laps. Despite having more power and more torque, pure performance is slower than the R8 Spyder.
The Mercedes bet on a V8 bi-turbo 5.5-liter block capable of delivering 585 hp and a tremendous torque of 900 Nm.
The Audi can presume to offer an acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.6 seconds and a top speed that exceeds 300, in particular, can reach up to 3300, / h of a tip.
The Mercedes must conform with a 0 to 100 km / h in 4.1 seconds and a limited speed of series to 250 km / h. The customer who prefers, after disbursing some extra dollars, may request that this limitation is eliminated, so that the SL 63 can also exceed 300 km / h.
The Mercedes trusts everything in the rear wheels. The Audi has full Quattro all-wheel drive.
Another difference between the two models is that the Audi bets on an automatic double clutch and seven gear coupled Quattro all-wheel drive system. The Mercedes also has an automatic change of seven relationships but being conventional does not have the fineness and speed that the R8 Spyder. On the other hand, the SL 63 transmits all its fury to the wheels of the rear axle, with all that this entails.
The weight of both models is quite similar, the Audi R8 Spyder certifies 1,800 kg on the scale while the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 a bit more, 1,850 kg total.
Efficacy vs comfort
One of the hallmarks of the Audi is its curve-by-turn. Thanks to a super sporty chassis and all-wheel drive, it’s a pleasure to take it to the limit on a mountain road.
For the writing of Cars are already a few R8 that have passed through the hands of different testers and in most cases, we have agreed that the qualities of the Audi are faultless. It is an atmospheric car, with a progressive engine that rages as we go up in turns and it seems never to et to the cut of injection.
When we place the needle of the rev counter near the red zone is a real bullet delivering all its potential to the most expert hands. The Quattro all-wheel drive is a plus of guarantees when driving to the limit and allows you to roll much faster than one could at first imagine. The traction capacity, the stability and a step by curve very fast are the signs of identity of this convertible so “racing”.
The atmospheric V10 engine delivers the power in a progressive way. As we approach the cut pushes more and more without stopping.
With the Audi Drive Select we can change the temperament of the car and adapt the response of the engine, the hardness of the suspensions or the direction to the type of driving that we are going to realize.
The propeller of the Mercedes is felt from the first trample to the accelerator, in any range of revolutions to which we are rolling. The tremendous 900 Nm of torque ensures strong accelerations and recoveries of dishonour, but you have to be careful when handling all that “kick” so as not to make the rear wheels skid.
Different ways of understanding the interior
A feeling of quality is superior in the SL 63, both by design and by the materials used.
Personally I stay with the cabin of the Mercedes for the great feeling of quality that gives off both its design and the materials that have been used in its manufacture. The SL offers everything one expects from a high-end Mercedes: leather seats with very comfortable and ergonomic forms, air heating Scarf for the neck that allows us to circulate in winter convertibles, massage for the seats, aluminium in the great majority Buttons and carbon trim that add that sporty touch that all AMG models have.
